Four months have been passed and drawbacks are still there in Horticulture Express. National horticulture board started this Horticulture Express in June on trial basis. For transportation of onions from Nasik district, board has started this express from Kherwadi to Bengal. Following this farmers and trading firms are eagerly waiting for Horticulture Express.
For farmers producing onions, National Horticulture Board and Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) of central government jointly started a special Horticulture Express on trial basis. This express was likely to reach Bengal within three days for delivery of onions. 17 tons in one container of train and in whole train total 537 metric tons onion was likely to transport.
Fare of one container was Rs 25000 and added service tax was likely to collect by CONCOR. Farmers from Niphad, Lasalgaon, Pimpalgaon were able to send their onions and other agro-products through this express.
Farmers are now demanding for Horticulture Express to be started soon. Though some agro-product trading firms expressed that each wagon of Horticulture Express have capacity of 17 tons on onion that's why fare seems to high for them. They also suggest that capacity of wagon should be increased up to 40 tons. Farmers and trading firms are facing difficulties for transportation; they have demanded 50 containers extra. Follow up for starting of Horticulture Express shifts is being on great effort.
Relating to the future plans to begin and boost the regularity of the train service benefitting the farmers and small traders, the railway officials maintained that this was only potential once the loading point was firm and the traders approved to load the rakes at the offered rates.
